WE ARE GYM

We are – in motion, moved, body and mind, as one. One with the machine. Together!
Interface. Interfaces. Action. Interaction. Exhibition – Gym!

Experience yourself. Experience interaction with the devices we developed under the theme "Embodied Interaction – Embodied Cognition."

The starting point for our work is the human body in motion.
In specific movements, our bodies merge with the training equipment into a kinetic unity – an object that both enables and challenges our motor skills. In this, a unique beauty reveals itself: the immediate connection between human and machine.

A physical interaction – a form of embodied interaction – that our bodies perform intuitively and naturally, yet one that is simultaneously structured and motivated by the machine as a “controller interface.”

The goal of our work is the shared experience of body and mind in motion.
To achieve this, we expand and intensify the sense of beauty – that immediate connection between body and machine in the flow of movement – through additional layers of mental and emotional resonance: direct responses to our movements, which we feel physically and perceive mentally.

This experience is both familiar and captivating – because body and mind are not separate entities in our thinking but are deeply intertwined.
We think and perceive through our bodies – a principle known as embodied cognition.

The machine, acting as a control unit or controller interface, becomes a bidirectional point of contact: it guides the body's movements while simultaneously being guided by them.

A loop of action and reaction emerges – closing into an intensely lived interaction experience.
Body, mind, and machine merge into a sensual, kinetic unit.

With WE ARE GYM, we celebrate the shared flow – the interplay of body, movement, and design.

At the same time, this exhibition marks a special anniversary:
20 years of Interface Design within the Industrial Design program at Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel.

In 2005, Prof. Frank Jacob was given the opportunity to establish this visionary field of teaching at the university – a defining moment that continues to shape the profile of the program to this day.

In parallel, WE ARE GYM further develops the profile of sp ce | Muthesius as a research-oriented institution: a space that offers impulses for teaching, initiates interdisciplinary collaboration, and creates room for the practical exploration of artistic and academic research through curatorial means.
