Fine Arts* Dr. Mark Lenz, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

Detailed schedule:
5:00 PM
Start / Experience the exhibition
5:30 PM: Prof. Tom Duscher, Professor of Interactive Media
In his keynote address, Prof. Tom Duscher will discuss visual research in science communication. The master’s program “Interactive Information Design” at Muthesius University of the Arts follows the “Research Through Design” approach. Consequently, the design projects not only represent the results of an engagement with scientific topics but are also to be regarded as an integral part of the research itself.
5:45 PM: Dr. Mark Lenz, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, in German followed by Q&A Every resident of Kiel
is familiar with mussels from visits to the beach or walks along the Kiellinie. But hardly anyone knows how these animals live and what significance mussels have for many coasts and also for many coastal residents worldwide. I will introduce their biology and their amazing adaptations and show how human-induced environmental changes are making life difficult for them.
***short break***
7:00 PM: Kiran Pereira, Stockholm Resilience Center, author of “Sand Stories,” in English, followed by a Q&A
In her talk, Kiran Pereira explores sand as one of the most widely used yet underestimated resources in the modern world. She offers insights into the ecological and social consequences of global sand mining—from receding coastlines to endangered ecosystems. The approximately 30-minute talk will be followed by an open Q&A session and invites participants to reflect together on a resource once thought to be inexhaustible.
