The collaborative installation FIELD.3 by Mariska de Groot and Dieter Vandoren presents a fascinating fusion of light, sound, and architecture. In seven architectural units, the artists create a spatial network that evokes mythical places and generates a shimmering field of timeless suspension.
This light and sound installation is based on the artists’ ongoing research into dynamic architectures composed of solid and ephemeral media. In a complex network of light- and sound-emitting nodes, innovative and ancient technologies converge. Sculptural beams of light form a pulsating field controlled by choreographed light projections, serving as an aesthetic element that brings the immersive architecture to life.
Each of the 40 pole-mounted nodes contains a transparent piezoelectric sound cylinder with two stacked Nixie neon tubes. An integrated signal generator synchronously modulates light and sound, creating audible pressure waves and visible light patterns. The unstable Nixie neon tube, an analog medium, is used here as an expression of complex physical laws and lends the installation its lively dynamism. FIELD.3 invites visitors to become part of a constantly changing, organic composition of light and sound—an experience that redefines technology, art, and space.
Mariska de Groot (b. 1982, Netherlands) is an interdisciplinary artist who creates immersive installations at the intersection of light, sound, and space. Using self-built instruments, she explores technology and perception through experimental approaches inspired by historical inventions. She earned a B.A. in graphic design from ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem and a master’s degree from the ArtScience Interfaculty in The Hague.
